Save Money On Penticton Home Improvement Projects

A home improvement project requires that the part of the home that needs repair or improvement is only renovated. This does affect the rest of the house, although no work is done throughout the house. A lot of money can be saved with proper planning and execution. Penticton, situated in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, is nestled between two beautiful lakes. It has long summers, short winters and an early spring. A home here has to withstand all types of temperatures. So, improvements need to be made to homes, to make them perfect for living, as the climatic conditions will have an effect on the exterior of the house – the walls, the roofing etc. You can add new features like sun decks and sunrooms to make the best use of the long summers.

The parts of the home that need improvement have to be looked into closely to identify all the defects and then work on them. You should plan in such a way that improvements are made step by step. The improvements and repairs on the floors, walls should be done first, and then the doors and windows. After this, you should think of improvements on the furniture and then the furnishing of the house. You can work on the outside of the home, after finishing the inside. In the beginning of the planning stage itself, you should think of the color scheme, the style and think of the whole effect that the improvement will have on the house. With this idea, you can plan. Such a plan will save you time and money.

A good contractor should be hired and the deal for all the improvements should be discussed and price quotes obtained. You should have an estimated time of arrival (ETA), so that you will know when the contractor will start the work and when it will be finished. The initial contract should be comprehensive to cover all costs. If any changes are made later, the charges are generally extra. It would be best to get quotes from different contractors to know which would suit you the best and which offers you the lowest in terms of price. Always calculate cost with a 10% leeway so that you are able to handle the expenses. This should not include the fees charged for transportation, hauling of old bricks and other smaller expenses. It might also be a good idea to contact a lawyer if you have any doubts about the contract for the work, before you sign the contract.

The best thing would be to get the work done during off season. The contractors will not be busy as much and you will be able to get the work done quickly. This means that an air conditioner should be fixed in winter, when the prices and labor might be cheaper.

Tiles and wooden flooring might have to be changed. These will be available at a lower price, when there is a sale due to over stocking. You should take advantage of such sales. Whenever you can find a less expensive alternative like having a pre-fabricated fireplace instead of a traditional one, you should go for it as it will work out to be cheaper. Paints, tiles and bricks are best bought in a large quantity, (as much as you need), as otherwise you might not get the matching tile or the right shade of paint. The same theme or color can be followed all over the house. This will save money.

Always try to do whatever you can, to save costs. If after an extra room is built, you can do the painting. Even a little of demolition, landscaping etc, can be handled by you. It is easy to improve the look of the house, even with a few changes. If the carpet is old, you can change it. The walls can be repainted. You can use wall paper to make the rooms colorful. The seepage in the floor and ceiling can be repaired. The necessary plumbing work can be done. The pipelines and drainage can be checked for leaks, air locks and proper functioning. The bathroom fixtures can be changed to make them look new and also for proper functioning. The doors and windows can be checked for wear and tear and changed if necessary. These can also be painted. These repairs and changes will make the home look good and will not be expensive.

You need not necessarily go in for expensive options. So, you can make small improvements with the limited resources available and still change the look of the house.
